What kind of traveler are you: one looking for thrilling adventures and experiences, or one who wishes to take it easy and relax? Perhaps a mix of both?
Sometimes it can be difficult to find a place to go that offers both options.
At The Roots Eco Resort, however, you can enjoy the best of both worlds.
Nestled among the iconic limestone karsts that are scattered across Perak’s Kinta Valley, the nature-inspired resort is only 30 minutes away from the state’s capital, Ipoh.
Thanks to its ideal location, the resort is the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the unique natural wonders nearby.
The resort’s villas, made from wood and bamboo, are modeled after the homes of the local indigenous people, also known as the orang asli.
Guests can choose between the Studio Apartment, River Villa, Orchard Villa, or Treehouse, each offering a stunning view of the surrounding greenery.
The Orchard Villas, for example, are tucked within a bountiful fruit orchard, while the River Villas are set along the banks of the Kinta River, equipped with a jacuzzi on the balcony – just the thing for a relaxing late night dip!
So you’re probably wondering what kind of fun activities are to be found at this peaceful rainforest oasis. Here are some of the things that you can experience during your stay, be it at the resort or somewhere close by.
(Do note, however, that most of these activities, should you wish to book through the resort, must be booked a few days in advance.)
Conquer the white water rapids of Kampar River
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try your hand at white water rafting? Perak’s Kampar River near Gopeng is a popular white water rafting destination and is suitable for the inexperienced.
The resort staff can make arrangements for you, including transportation to and from the resort, but you’ll need to book at least three days in advance.
Enjoy the season’s fruits
If you’re visiting during the right time of the year, you can make the most of the resort’s fruit orchard and savor various local fruits right off the tree, such as rambutan, durian, duku langsat, and mangosteen. The fruit picking season is usually mid-year and the end of the year.
Trek through the jungle
If you’re a fan of hiking, then there are plenty of options to choose from. You can catch a gorgeous sunset and get a panoramic view of the valley from the top of a nearby hill, followed by a barbecue dinner by the river.
Or you can venture through the jungle at night to an orang asli village at the foot of Mount Korbu, after which you’ll be rewarded by your hosts with a traditional orang asli dinner.
Go abseiling down a waterfall
Here’s another one for the adrenaline junkies: if you’re not afraid of heights (or wish to conquer it), then abseil from the top of Ulu Geruntum waterfall. The waterfall is about two storeys high, so it’s perfect for beginners.
It’s a refreshing experience to abseil down a crashing wall of water, and you can even do it more than once if you like!
Explore the largest limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia
Gua Tempurung, or Tempurung Cave, is Peninsular Malaysia’s largest limestone cave, and is a favorite among spelunkers and caving enthusiasts.
The cave system comprises five large domes that resemble coconut shells, hence its name, tempurung, which means coconut shell in Bahasa Malaysia.
One of the available tours allows you to splash through the underground river and crawl through narrow passages. Fair warning, though: it’s not recommended for those who don’t like the dark or tight spaces.
