Events in Malaysia: What’s Happening in June 2016

The Gawai Festival which is celebrated by the Dayak community of Malaysia, is typically followed by an Open House that welcomes anyone and everyone. Join the locals this 2 June 2016, where you get to meet and greet them. If you’re lucky, you might get a chance to try some of their traditional costumes!

Terengganu Peranakan Festival

In Terengganu, the terms Awang and Mek are used to refer to the Peranakan community. Join them at this cultural event, on 8 June 2016, at Kampung Cina in Kuala Terengganu.

Pesta Babulang dan Lumba Kerbau Bisaya

Join the Bisaya community of Sarawak in this upcoming festival, where you can experience the community’s cultural performances and traditional games. There will also be a buffalo race! The event will take place from 6 – 8 June 2016.

2. Follow Local Beats

Malaysians love to dance – and it’s even better when you’re dancing too! Find out where the locals are having fun this month!

Sunset Music Fest

Dancing as the sun goes down – isn’t that romantic? From 3 – 4 June 2016, that’s what some of Sabah’s locals will be doing! Join them for a musical journey at Tanjung Simpany Mengayau, Kudat, where they’ll be playing soothing, classical and contemporary tunes.

KK Jazz Festival

Dikir Barat Perdana

From 18 – 19 June 2016, a group of 10 or 15 men will be performing a chorus, accompanied by traditional Malay instruments, such as Malay gongs and percussions. This is what we call a ‘Dikir Barat’. What’s unique about it is its style and concept – that portrays unity, team spirit, and synchronisation, whilst satirical as well as funny messages are embedded in order to create all kinds of reactions amongst the audience.
