Facts and Statistics of Indonesian Aviation:

1. Indonesia consists of more than 17,500 islands, spanning three timezones
2. In a day, there are more than 3.000 flights connecting the vast archipelago
3. The Indonesia aviation sector has been booming since the turn of the century, and still maintains a significant growth, mostly in the low-cost travelers segment
4. In 2010, Domestic flights dominated the Indonesian skies with 83.5% but international flights has bigger growth with 23% from 2009
5. The nation’s biggest airline is Lion Air which caters to more than 40 percent of the market. Lion Air itself is a hybrid carrier, which is not fully LCC, and not a full-fledged medium-carrier

9. serving flights from 150+ cities
10. by more than 60 airlines
11. But most Indonesian airports are under-maintained, single runway airports with less than 900 meters of runway lenght which makes for heavy utilization of regional and general aviation aircraft. The likes ATR42, ATR72, Xian MA60 and Bombardier Dash-8 are the backbone of regional airlines that connects remote islands to major cities
12. In the next few years, there will be a flood of new aircrafts delivered to Indonesia to replace the aging fleet of major airlines.
Lion Air: 201 Boeing 737 MAX
Garuda Indonesia: 70 Boeing 737-800
Sky Aviation: 12 Sukhoi Superjet 100
which has to be supported by significant improvement of Indonesia’s poor aviation infrastructure. Else, the industry will come to a screeching halt or even fatal disaster due to constraints and limit of the system.
